Hand-Made in a Digital Age

Alphabet was engaged to develop the brand and campaign identity for Rememory, the 25th Biennale of Sydney. The brief was to create a visual identity that could capture the raw, tactile energy of hand-generated art and protest signs, while reflecting the Biennale’s contemporary and experimental approach.

The campaign identity needed to work across multiple touchpoints, from digital platforms to on-site signage, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that signifies the intersection of memory and history, where recollection becomes an act of reassembling fragments of the past—whether personal, familial, or collective. Our approach focused on texture, materiality, and human imperfection to echo the spirit of the artworks and the conversations they inspire.

“History versus memory, and memory versus memorylessness. Rememory as in recollecting and remembering as in reassembling the members of the body, the family, the population of the past.” Toni Morrison, Beloved 1987.

In a world saturated with information and increasingly frictionless communication, the REMEMORY campaign returns to something more elemental: the mark of the hand, the presence of the maker, and the enduring power of craft as a signal of authenticity.

Website Strategy and Design

The Biennale of Sydney faces a unique digital challenge: maintaining a relevant, engaging website year-round, while transforming it into a dynamic, campaign-led experience during the Biennale itself. Previously, this required significant redesign and development every two years, a costly and time-intensive process during peak delivery periods for the Biennale team.

We reimagined the site as a flexible, future-proof platform. By introducing a modular “on/off” system within the core architecture, the Biennale can activate a dedicated exhibition layer, including navigation and campaign content, without disrupting the base site. The design system allows each edition to be re-skinned by updating colour, typography and hero content, removing the need to revisit the structure or rebuild templates. Working closely with the Biennale team and developers, we delivered a scalable, sustainable platform that reduces production overhead and enables each Biennale to come to life with clarity and impact.
